AIDS In AmericaNearly everyone in the world is aware of AIDS and the horrific toll that it's taken on all of human life. In some of the hardest-hit countries, more than half of the population may be infected. Luckily, due to increased preventative measures and advancements in cleanliness and sterilization, AIDS in America is much more contained, though by no means is it an insignificant concern. The first known carrier of AIDS in America was traced back to approximately 1969. Since then, the virus has been spread to every corner of the country. While statistics are often unreliable, public health officials believe that AIDS in America is one of the top three killers of African American males and females. This is alarming news, considering the proliferation and availability of preventative measures. Some of the spread of AIDS in America is related to intravenous drug use, though most cases of AIDS in America can be traced back to sexual contact. What are some of the things you can do to prevent the spread of AIDS in America? The first rule is always practice safe sex, no matter who you're with. Avoid intravenous drug use, especially utilizing needles that were previously used by someone else. Finally, always try to carry a first aid kit containing latex gloves in case you come across an injured person and you stop to help. Since you never know if they are infected, the gloves may help to protect you. No one is sure what the future of AIDS in America will be, but it seems clear that we all need to be more vigilant and more dedicated to the cause of stopping its further spread. If you believe that you may have been exposed to the body fluids of an HIV-positive or AIDS-infected person, it's always a good idea to get tested. Your community health clinic or your regular doctor can help you with this. |
